Introduction

Sabanci UniversityThe Biological Sciences and Bioengineering Program at Sabancı University has ten faculty members who conduct research on modern biological problems. We offer a curriculum designed to encompass three areas of biological sciences: plant biology, bioinformatics and molecular and cellular biology. Our laboratories have modern infrastructure and cutting-edge research equipment. We are engaged in research and development projects and collaborate with researchers around the world.

Research Areas

Molecular and Cellular Biology

There are extensive research on eukaryotic gene expression, with focus on the regulation of NFkB and AP-1 activation and target gene expression by inflammatory cytokines. Stress Induced Signaling is another focus of this area. The research group is working on adaptive responses to oxidative stress in eukaryotic systems and cell death signaling in plant and mammalian cells.

Plant Molecular Biology and Genetics

Research in plant molecular biology and genetics is attracting increasing attention within the scientific community, because biotechnology research is extensively involved in product development for many agricultural, chemical, and pharmaceutical companies.

Structural and Computational Biology

The researchers are interested in structure-function relations of plants metallothioneins, structural analysis of plants TOLL-interleukin I like resistance genes. Functional analysis of plant G-proteins involved in signal transduction are achieved using modeling and synchrotron X-ray diffraction and scattering methods.

Introduction

The role of education in conservation and in addressing the rapidly increasing environmental problems, while improving the environment, is well-known today. According to the Turkish constitution: Everyone has the right to live in a healthy and balanced environment. Protection of environmental health, prevention of environmental pollutions and development of the environment are the State's and every citizen's duty. (Constitution, Article 56.)

Education for the environment is not only a task of formal educational institutions, but also of civic organizations, mass media and local municipalities, which play a large role in increasing public awareness. Environmental problems recognize no artificial boundaries based on geography or ideology.1,2 For this reason, every nation must be assigned an international task for increasing public consciousness through mass media and education.

In this paper, education for the environment in the Turkish national education system will be summarized and discussed, as well as how the principles and ideas of biopolitics would be incorporated into the educational system at each stage.

METU - Department of City and Regional Planning

Department Information

Established in 1961, the Department of City and Regional Planning is one of the oldest and largest schools of planning in Turkey. With more than 2,000 graduates and not less than 400 undergraduate and graduate students today, the Department of City and Regional Planning has played a key role not only in planning education but also in the development of urban research in Turkey.

Department’s undergraduate and graduate curricula have been designed with the understanding that the challenges facing urban planners have multiplied especially in the last two decades and the scope of tasks that planners are expected to undertake has considerably widened. As far as planning education is considered, this means that planners need to be equipped not only with conventional skills but also with the skills required to cope with the new challenges. Planners must now be capable of formulating questions in the light of the inputs of a variety of disciplines and synthesizing these inputs without falling into the dilemma between comprehensiveness and partiality. The aim of the undergraduate program is to train planners who can perceive holistic relationships, develop alternative views (utopian/realist) on how to transform these relationships and produce creative designs for the future and who possess the ability of investigating in depth without falling into partiality. Planners need, therefore, to be equipped with a variety of skills ranging from quantitative analysis techniques to social and economic analyses required to understand how the urban system works.

About EED

Akdeniz ÜniversitesiThe Department of Environmental Engineering has ten full-time faculty members and five research assistants dedicated to research and also education of more than 200 undergraduate students and 20 graduate students. The education in the department prepares students for leadership in the profession of environmental engineering. Career opportunities are very strong because of the many pressing needs to improve and expand the infrastructure and protect the environment.

The EED have three research and one teaching laboratory providing opportunities for hands-on experience for all students. As Antalya lies along the Mediterranean cost as an important destination for tourism, the need for sustainable use of environmental resources gives opportunities for our students to experience ground-breaking local environmental engineering projects and participate in professional activities.
