E-mail Print PDF

Dead planet, living planet: Biodiversity and ecosystem restoration for sustainable developmentBiodiversity and ecosystems deliver crucial services to humankind - from food security to keeping our waters clean, buffering against extreme weather, providing medicines to recreation and adding to the foundation of human culture. Together these services have been estimated to be worth over 21-72 trillion USD every year - comparable to the World Gross National Income of 58 trillion USD in 2008.

Green Economy - Developing Countries Success StoriesThe economic analysis in the Green Economy Report builds in part on the encouraging signs and results of many initiatives around the world. A number of these come from developing countries, including emerging economies, and illustrate a positive benefit stream from specific green investments and policies, that if scaled up and integrated into a comprehensive strategy, could offer an alternative development pathway, one that is pro-growth, projobs and pro-poor.

E-mail Print PDF

Geneva, 16 January 2009 - This PowerPoint presentation builds on past and present work of the WBCSD's Ecosystems Focus Area, as well as on information generated by The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the World Resources Institute. It aims to raise awareness around the links and relationships between business and ecosystems.

The presentation ( 7.3 MB) is structured in modules, which can be used independently or together. Delivering all modules is expected to take around 3.5 hours.

The modules include:

  • Elevator speech – getting hooked (10 minutes)
  • Definitions and concepts – setting the scene (30 minutes)
  • Status and supply – urgency for action (30 minutes)
  • Drivers and causes of change – cause and effect (20 minutes)
  • Consequences of degradation – impacts (30 minutes, if examples are incorporated)
  • Responses – ways forward (90 minutes)

By including examples and case studies of business risks and opportunities arising from a company's dependence and/or impact on ecosystem services, the business case for ecosystems can be further strengthened. For examples of ecosystem service-related business risks and opportunities please see those compiled by WRI.

The target audience is WBCSD member companies and the broader business community, and anyone else interested in learning more about the nexus between business and ecosystems.

Buildings and Climate Change: a Summary for Decision-Makers

E-mail Print PDF

Buildings and Climate Change: a Summary for Decision-MakersA Summary for Decision Makers, the latest UNEP-SBCI report, highlights the potential of more efficient buildings in addressing climate change. The report argues that a failure to encourage more energy-efficient and low-carbon buildings will lock countries into the disadvantages of poor performing buildings for decades, and states that governments will fail to meet emission reduction targets if they exclude the building sector. This sector has the highest potential of all to deliver greenhouse gas emissions cuts, at the least cost, using available and mature technologies!
